Thermal printers are commonly used in a variety of settings, including retail stores, offices, and medical facilities. They are often used for printing receipts, labels, and other small documents.

There are two main types of thermal printers: direct thermal and thermal transfer. Direct thermal printers use heat-sensitive paper that turns black when heated, while thermal transfer printers use a ribbon to transfer ink onto the paper.

Thermal printers are known for their speed and efficiency, as they can produce high-quality prints quickly and without the need for ink or toner. They are also relatively low maintenance, as they do not require replacement cartridges or frequent cleaning. However, thermal printers can be more expensive to operate over time, as the special paper or ribbon they require can be more costly than traditional printing materials.

Thermal printing is generally not considered to be archive-safe because the images and text produced by thermal printers tend to fade over time, particularly when exposed to heat, light, and humidity. This can make them difficult to read or illegible after a few years.

A lot of businesses use thermo printers for their receipts for example. Even movie theaters now use thermo movie stubs.

However, some thermal printing technologies are designed for archival use, such as those used in some high-end photo printers. These printers use special thermal paper and inks that are specifically formulated to resist fading and discoloration over time.

Overall, if you need to produce documents or images that need to be preserved for a long time, it is best to use other printing technologies such as inkjet or laser printing, or to use archival-grade thermal printing technology if it is available.
