Paper weights

When you print on a printer, it ask you type of paper for a reason, so it can adjust for the thickness. When you print on a digital printer, it specifically ask for the type of paper, the size of the paper and the thickness of the paper.

In this photo above, they wanted thinner stock, 80#, as you can see a business card box that normally holds around 250 business cards, with 80# is not as full.

A 100# usually fills that box up, yes there may be just over 250 as we do print extra sheets, at least at the print shop I work at.
Paper weight is the thickness of the paper. For example text copy paper is usually 20# text, while business cards, can often use 100# cover or 14 pt C2S or C1S stock.
